Musical Instruments In Schools

17th June 2013

The first musical instruments purchased as part of the £1 million investment by the Scottish Government are beginning to arrive in schools across Scotland.

Learning Minister Alasdair Allan today visited Tynewater Primary School, which is one of the first schools to receive their new instruments.

At the visit Dr Allan, said:“I’m delighted to be at Tynewater Primary School to see the first delivery of new musical instruments purchased as part of the Government’s Instrumental Music Fund.

“The £1 million funding will help to fulfil our ambition that every child should have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument as part of the broad general education they are entitled to under Curriculum for Excellence.

“These instruments will allow more young people to learn to enjoy the benefits of learning to play an instrument. Learning through music encourages creativity, builds confidence and promotes team work.

“I look forward to seeing and hearing the results of this funding in schools across the country over the coming weeks and months.”

Depute Leader of Midlothian Council, Councillor Owen Thompson said:

“We are delighted to receive this financial boost which will ensure that more of our pupils will have access to quality instruments. As well as introducing new instruments, we are also now in a position to repair some of our existing stock.”

On December 16, 2012 the Government announced £1 million funding to the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland to enable local authorities to purchase new musical instruments for use in schools.
