'Moch's mi'g Èirigh ...' A celebration of Màiri Mhòr nan Òran - if you happen to be in Portree
A three day festival, 'Moch's mi'g Èirigh..', will celebrate the life, work and song of one of Gaeldom's greatest female songwriters, Mary MacPherson, known as "Màiri Mhòr nan Òran" (Big Mary of the Songs).   Màiri Mhòr did not begin to write songs until she was fifty, when she was a widow with five children, long exiled from her native Skye.

After a fantastic and eclectic semi final in Dundee's best live venue Fat Sams on August 24th - with performances from Black Velveteens, Liquid Blue, Callel, Peski Kings, Whale Engineering, a special set from The Electrolites and Barry Greig's recitals of his self-penned poetry - this year's Best Band Competition finalists were announced.   Local Caithness band Liquid Blue has made it into the final of The Ultimate Chill Best Band Competition 2007.

As Others See Us - Portraits from the Highlands - Inverness Museum & Art Gallery
1 - 29th September 2007 As Others See Us, an innovative exhibition of portraits by some of the Highlands and Scotland's leading artists, opens at Inverness Museum & Art Gallery this Saturday (1 September).  Part of the programme for Highland 2007, the year Scotland celebrates Highland culture, the exhibition's title and theme refer to the famous quote from a Robert Burns poem "Oh wad some power the giftie gie us To see oursel's as others see us!" Twelve artists were invited to paint a self-portrait and a portrait of another artist, either of their choice or selected by the exhibition~s curator, Gordon Brown of Brown's Gallery, Tain.

Possible Funding Opportunity For Struggling Artists Over 30 Years Old
OPPENHEIM-JOHN DOWNES MEMORIAL TRUST: Deadline: Monday 15 October 2007 The Oppenheim-John Downes Memorial Trust offers financial assistance to deserving artists of any kind, whether writers, painters, sculptors, musicians, dancers, actors, craftsmen or artists of any comparable nature or description who are unable effectively to pursue their vocation by reason of their financial difficulties.   As a general guide the maximum award would be £1,000 but, in exceptional circumstances, the Trustees may consider making a larger award.

HIE Board Backs Ambitious New Age For Gaelic
Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is aiming to put in place an ambitious Gaelic plan which it hopes will embed Gaelic as a defining feature of the Highlands and Hebrides and as a core element of the region's development over the years to come.   The commitment was revealed in a presentation to the HIE board at its regular board meeting which was held in Orkney this week.

Christmas has come early to the Highlands as Unity Recording Studio at Auldearn has been transformed into Santa's Grotto so Fiona Mackenzie, the Mairi Mhòr Fellow for The Highland Council, and Scotland's top musicians can get into the festive spirit as they record the first ever Gaelic Christmas Album.   Taking a break from recording Fiona said: "This is a totally unique project and a very exciting one at that.

The Course will begin on Friday 28th September at 8pm with a short recital given by Carole Sutherland (saxophone) and Laura Baxter (piano).
