Lyth Arts Centre Awarded Funding Arts Council
Lyth Arts Centre www.lytharts.org.uk The Lyth Arts Centre Programme for February and March 09 is now available on our website There are two events, a play called "Baby Baby" performed by Stellar Quines on Saturday 28th February and a concert by the Scottish band Box Club on Tuesday 17th March.  These will be the final events in our 08/09 programme.

Transform - Major Theatre Project Coming To Caithness June 2009
National Theatre of Scotland Learn opens up great theatre experiences to as many people as possible across Scotland.  Since the launch of the National Theatre of Scotland in February 2006, National Theatre of Scotland Learn has created many educational and outreach theatre projects, involving over 74,000 participants and audience members, has connected with over 3000 workshops and worked with over 85 schools in 26 Scottish local authority areas.

Precious Cargo for Thurso Gallery Swanson Gallery, Thurso 14 Feb to 14 Mar Precious Cargo An exhibition which has been specially created for Scotland's Year of Homecoming with a Highland focus goes on show at the Swanson Gallery, Thurso from 14 February to 14 March.  The exhibition has been designed by Brodie Nairn and Nicky Burns from Glasstorm in Tain as an innovative installation of cargo boxes, each revealing new objects or contemporary 'souvenirs' of the Highlands, which travellers to lands across the sea might have cherished to remind them of 'home'.

You may already be aware that Noise Ensemble, the percussion show that is much more besides (comedy, audience interaction and stunning visual effects) ,comes to Eden Court, Inverness for one night only.  The show is perfect for all ages - I know many shows say that, but this really is suitable for all generations of a family and audience feedback is testament to that.

Final home determined for Faith, Hope and Charity statues
The location of a permanent home for three nine foot statues, Faith, Hope and Charity, that once adorned the roof of an Inverness High Street drapers store, was decided today by members of The Highland Council's Inverness City Committee.   In principle, Ness Bank Church Gardens on the banks of the River Ness will be the final resting place of the statues which spent over 50 years in Orkney since the building on which they were orginally sited was demolished.

Sgriobhadh sa Sgìre is the name of a new Highland Gaelic writing initiative which will see published authors and established writers visiting schools to work alongside pupils.   The writers will also take in part in arts and community based events and the project will also promote Gaelic books through sales and marketing.

BÒRD NA GÀIDHLIG LAUNCHES MYGAELIC.COM
The Gaelic development agency Bòrd na Gàidhlig, launched a major new information and networking site on 4th February 2009, www.mygaelic.com which aims to be the place to visit for everyone who wants to learn more about Gaelic - Gaelic language and culture, tourism, events relating to Gaelic and, how and where they can engage with the language.  mygaelic.com is aimed at Gaelic speakers and novices alike, offering something for everyone with an interest in wishing to learn more about the language or indeed learning to speak Gaelic.

BNS Nuclear Services Ltd, in conjunction with DSRL recently held a series of safety presentations at several local primary schools with Oscar the robot.   The primary schools were invited to submit a poster based upon the theme of safety in the home with the first prize being a laptop for the school.

Philip Todd from Wick is in the running to achieve a national film award.  Philip, a former pupil of Thurso High School submitted an entry to FilmG, MG ALBA's innovative Gaelic online digital shorts competition, and has been shortlisted in the Best Performance section of the New Entrant category with a chance of winning £500.

BLAS Festival Announces 2009 Programme
The Blas Festival is set to play a role in attracting tourists to the Highlands as it launches its new programme for 2009.  Blas will deliver a series of special concerts to be played in distilleries across the region as well as performances by top music artistes such as Dougie Maclean in venues ranging from village halls to Eden Court Theatre.

BOARD APPOINTMENTS AT CREATIVE SCOTLAND
Two further non-executive directors for the company that will complete work to merge the Scottish Arts Council (SAC) and Scottish Screen (SS) into Creative Scotland - the new single national development body for arts and culture - were named today.   Chair of Creative Scotland 2009 Ltd, Ewan Brown, welcomed Dr Chris Masters CBE and Peter Cabrelli, who will join the new company's board which meets for the first time today.

Opportunity for Artists and Makers at St Fergus Gallery, Wick
The St Fergus Gallery is currently looking for Local Artists and Craft makers to submit work for display in "The Foyer" the new Local Arts Area in Wick Library.  Having recently acquired new display cabinets we now have the scope to show craft items, eg jewellery and textiles as well as wall based work.

Caithness Hosts Exhibition Celebrating 300 Years Recording Nature
A key SNH contribution to the Year of Highland Culture 2007 programme is now on show for the public in Caithness.   Scottish Natural Heritage's Highland Naturalists display is available for free public viewing at Caithness Horizons in Thurso from 20 January until 15 March.

CHINA - Photographs by Swanson Gallery, Thurso
To 9th Feb 2009 www.highland.gov.uk/swansongallery American photojournalist Eve Arnold was one of the first western photographers to enter communist China.  She made her visit in 1979, at a time when its government was opening up to the outside world, and the exhibition shows a remarkable set of 40 of photos from this trip.

An exhibition of over 1000 digital images featuring pupils of Hillhead Primary School, their families and home life runs in the St Fergus Gallery Wick from the 9th January until the 7th February 2009.  Entitled "At Home" the pictures give a fascinating insight in to the lives of primary school pupils Eight budget digital cameras were purchased by the school and used to take the pictures between October and December last year.
